Sick of steak & potatoes? Maybe you should have a Bite! in Inglewood instead!

Bite! Groceteria & Caffé is located in the heart of the Inglewood district of Calgary, Alberta. Originally a specialty supplier to restaurants around the city, it is now a destination for anyone who is ready to add that little something special to their culinary creations. From the only pasta in the world to be used in a 7 star resort (no joke!) to locally-made marinated veggies, this place has it all!

Aside from a shared love of all things culinary, co-owners Julie Denhamer & Doug Toub created Bite! because of a lack of specialty grocery stores found in the city. They strive to be a store where the aisles and shelves are far beyond the standard fare of your neighbourhood chain. There is a nice balance between local or Canadian products and imports from around the world here.

Surely a specialty grocery store like this would have some really unique items. Have you heard of le 1608 cheese? Well, neither had I until Doug brought out a slice for me to taste. At first wiff, the pungent smell was overwhelming, but the taste was definitely satisfying. Interestingly enough this cheese comes from a type of cow exclusive to the Quebecois region of Charlevoix, and is now considered to be endangered. So...endangered cheese? How cool is that? Although, I would feel bad eating an endangered cheese sandwich...

If that isn't enough, Bite! also provides daily lunch menu to anyone wanting to stop by for something eat (as well as delicious espresso-based and tea beverages). Chefs from some of Calgary's top restaurants offer their services daily. The daily menu relies on each chef's inspiration, so it changes daily, but is guaranteed to please your tastebuds!

Don't be scared of the vegan!

looks good doesn't it? (it's vegan...shh...and gluten-free)

There is no doubt in my mind that many people hear the word 'vegan' and associate it with something resembling rabbit food (I know that's how I felt last year.) Now, fast forward to January 2010, a new year, a new decade; Replacing my usual 'go to the gym more' new year's resolution I had opted to expand my culinary prowess. It's been 2 1/2 months now, and let me tell you, I have definitely fallen in love with the deliciousness that can be a vegan meal.

A good friend of mine in Calgary, Lisa Jordan Krasnow, just so happens to be the proprietor of a local vegan wholesale foods company called Anahata Foods. Who better to show me the vegan ropes? Of course, she was more than happy to collaborate on some vegan dinner nights with me. Week by week, I slowly came around, and am now proud to say that I am tofu's #1 fan!

This week I was lucky enough to aid her in the creation of 'cornmeal & herb crusted tofu w/vegan walnut pesto and a green been pepperonatta.' When a plate of food this beautiful is served to you, it is refreshingly easy to forget that there is no meat at all. I finished my last bite with complete satisfaction and a full belly. Definitely not a meat & potatoes kind of guy anymore, and proud of it! Although, I do still appreciate a good steak, and bacon & eggs on Sunday morning, and...hey...I never said I was converted to vegan, I was just trying to broaden my horizons and yours too. :)
